"We The Riottt!
San Francisco, CA
Rug cutting hip kids to (B)ape draped skate pimps all took shelter from the frustrating Bay Area rain clouds to take in the hot beats and guitars licks of Be The Riottt!, a convergence of b-boy fresh-to-def and dance floor skinny jean flare in the form of a 12 hour indoor minor league Coachella. Nomad jam punks, The RX Bandits, cranked up the energy generators early on during their afternoon set and setting the tone for a very corporate sparse music festival by denouncing the huge Scion projections above the stage. Texas based Friday Night Lights mute behemoths, Explosions in the Sky, brought tears to cheeks of a fair amount of sweater fitted kids with their emotional and thrash ready main stage evening set. The Rapture and Australian based The Presets created the biggest dance driven riots of the night as their electric boogie rhythms brought every toe tapper to the floor and provided fear on the face of stage security as hair whipping Frisco Disco/Pop*Scene alumni tested the strength of the front row barricades. The largest anomaly of the night took place when jabber mouth MC, Bus Driver, came on stage to collaborate with the only indie band known to have a female lead that looks strikingly similar to your good asian friend's mother, Deerhoof, in a rare moment of Spin type artist overlap. With the whirlwind of buzz bands and hip hop heavyweights filling the festival, the surprising highlight came from Greg Gillis aka Pittsburgh mash-up maestro Girl Talk as he failed to crowd surf, drenched the front stage in confetti, and surrounded himself with a quarter of the audience dancing around him and his laptop in his time allotted mainstage set. Local hip hop heroes, Zion-I and the Living Legends, provided energetic performances that instilled the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium with enough hip hop cred to get even the petite short haired fashion school blondies to wave their arms to the rhythm. Politically fueled, produce hurling MC, Sage Francis, definitely proved his weight in intensity demolishing his hour set with b-boy antics and the most punctual to your conscience lyrical delivery on the mainstage. Closing out the hip hop stage, Pharrell repped lyrically skewed duo, Clipse, brought the slump hard enough to give reasoning on why all those hip hop bloggers heads' are exploding in anticipation for their much delayed sophomore album. As the night came to an end, and the zip hoodie uniformed crowd made their way out, a Be The Riottt! job mission complete came in the form of a daunted Steve Aoki Budweiser in one hand, glorious blonde in the other, waving good night from outside the VIP."
